About Putnam Baptist Church
Since January 1847, Putnam Baptist Church has stood as a beacon of faith in the heart of Putnam, Connecticut. What began when sixteen women and eight men petitioned the Pomfret Baptist Church for permission to form a new congregation has grown into the oldest Baptist church in our town. Originally known as Wilkinson Baptist Church, we took our present name in 1855 when the town of Putnam was incorporated. For more than 175 years we have remained rooted in Scripture, committed to believer’s baptism, and dedicated to the historic principles of the American Baptist Churches USA—local church autonomy, the priesthood of all believers, and the authority of God’s Word.
Today, under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Phil Cannistraci, our mission remains as clear and passionate as ever: we want to know Christ deeply and make Him known boldly. We are a welcoming family of believers who gather each week to worship, grow in faith, and love our neighbors as Jesus taught us. Whether you are new to the area, returning to church after a long time, or simply seeking a place where the Gospel is preached with joy and truth, you will find a spiritual home here. Our desire is that every person who walks through our doors encounters the transforming grace of Jesus Christ and experiences the genuine fellowship of His people.
A vital part of our worship is the rich musical heritage that lifts our hearts to God each Sunday. Under the skilled leadership of Nonso Obiezue, our Director of Music and Organist since 2017, we blend the timeless beauty of the pipe organ and classical hymns with contemporary songs of praise. Nonso’s gifted playing and passionate direction help the entire congregation sing with joy, whether we are offering heartfelt worship, celebrating baptisms, or lifting anthems of God’s faithfulness. Through music that glorifies Christ, we are reminded that worship is not just something we do—it is who we are as a people saved by grace.
